There are programs available in or near Spalding that cater to both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, drugs which are administered in what is known as opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist the same as heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same neural receptors which cause an individual to feel high from morphine or heroin are stimulated by these two drugs so therefore an opiate addicted client will ideally not engage in drug seeking behavior and won't have cravings and withdrawal. There are dangers with drug interactions, side effects, and even addiction and overdose with both methadone and buprenorphine, which is why they are heavily controlled and can only be dispensed in a clinical setting.
Methadone and buprenorphine clients are on these medications regularly so they don't experience withdrawal symptoms, etc. but hopefully at a dosage which isn't at the same time causing them to feel euphoria. At programs that treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, treatment therapies are limited beyond managing the medication and the main treatment objective is to manage the withdrawal symptoms and put an end to the illicit drug use. Some centers do deliver a small amount of counseling and group therapy as secondary services, and it is encouraged.
