Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Centers - Spruce, MI.

Vivitrol is a drug used to help prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the drug Naltrexone, which is available via injection once a month. It is not habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks or tries to get high on opioids they essentially cannot get high or drunk.

There are particular safety measures that need to be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, a client who with the intent to start Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for at least 7-10 days. This is including clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds like Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been on Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of 7 days if they want to start Vivitrol.

These medications must be used as part of a rehab program in Spruce which also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak to your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological aids can help you live the sober life you want.
