Methadone and Buprenorphine Clients Only - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Facilities - St. Clair, MI.

There are programs available in or near St. Clair that cater to both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, drugs that are dispensed in what is known as opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist the same as heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, which means the same neural receptors which cause an individual to feel high from heroin or prescription pain killers are activated by these two drugs so that an opiate addicted client will ideally not become involved in addict behavior and won't have withdrawal symptoms. There are dangers with side effects, drug interactions, and even overdose with both methadone and buprenorphine, which is why they are highly controlled and can only be prescribed in a clinical setting.

Buprenorphine and methadone clients take these medications regularly so they don't experience withdrawal symptoms, etc. but hopefully at a dosage which isn't also making them feel high. Euphoria can be experienced at at higher dosages, more so with methadone than buprenorphine. At centers which treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, actual rehabilitation activities and therapies are limited beyond managing the medication and the main treatment goal is to treat the withdrawal symptoms and put an end to the illicit drug use. Some programs do deliver a small amount of counseling and therapy as auxiliary services, and this is recommended and encouraged.
