There are programs available in or near St. Joseph which service both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, controlled medications that are used in what is known as opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist the same as heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same neural receptors that cause an individual to feel high from heroin or prescription pain killers are activated by these two drugs so therefore an opioid addicted client will instead no longer become involved in drug seeking behavior and won't experience withdrawal symptoms. There are risks of drug interactions, side effects, and even addiction and overdose with both methadone and buprenorphine, which is why they are highly controlled and can only be dispensed in a clinical setting.
Methadone and buprenorphine clients are on these medications regularly so they don't experience withdrawal symptoms, etc. but hopefully at a dose which isn't also making them feel high. Euphoria is possible at at higher dosages, more so with methadone than buprenorphine. At clinics that treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, actual rehabilitation activities and therapies are generally limited beyond managing the medication and the primary treatment objective is to treat the physical symptoms of their dependence. Some centers do provide a limited amount of counseling and therapy as auxiliary treatment, and this is recommended and encouraged.
