There are programs offered in or near University Center which service both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, medications which are dispensed in what is called opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist the same as heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, which means the same neural receptors which cause an individual to feel high from heroin or prescription pain killers are activated by these two drugs so therefore an opiate addicted client will instead no longer become involved in addict behavior and won't experience cravings and withdrawal. There are dangers with side effects, drug interactions, and even overdose with both methadone and buprenorphine, which is why they are highly controlled and can only be administered in a clinical setting.

Methadone and buprenorphine clients take these medications daily so they don't experience cravings, withdrawal, etc. but hopefully at a dosage which isn't at the same time causing them to feel high. Euphoria is possible at at higher dosages, more so with methadone than buprenorphine. At centers which treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, actual rehabilitation activities and therapies are limited beyond this and the main treatment goal is to handle the physical symptoms of their dependence. Some centers do deliver a limited amount of counseling and group therapy as supplementary treatment, and this is encouraged.
