There are substance abuse programs available in or near Vassar that cater to both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, medications which are used in what is called opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist just like heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same nerve cell receptors which make a person feel high from heroin or prescription pain killers are activated by these two drugs so therefore an opiate dependent client will ideally no longer become involved in drug seeking behavior and won't experience cravings and withdrawal. There are risks of drug interactions, side effects, and even overdose with both methadone and buprenorphine, which is why they are highly controlled and can only be dispensed in a clinical setting.
Methadone and buprenorphine clients take these medications consistently so they don't experience withdrawal symptoms, etc. but hopefully at a dosage which isn't at the same time causing them to feel euphoria. Euphoria is possible at a high dosage, more so with methadone than buprenorphine. At centers that treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, actual rehabilitation activities and therapies are limited beyond this and the main treatment objective is to address the withdrawal symptoms and put an end to the illicit drug use. Some clinics do deliver a limited amount of counseling and group therapy as auxiliary services, and it is encouraged.
