Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Facilities - Vassar, MI.

Vivitrol is a medication used to prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the medication Naltrexone, that is available through a monthly injection. It is not addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual injects Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when someone takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they essentially cannot get drunk or high.

There are certain safety measures that should be be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, an individual who intends to start Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for at least seven to ten days. This is including people who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or someone who has been taking Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of seven days in order to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of a rehab program in Vassar which also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk with your doctor or therapist in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you maintain and build the sober life you want.
