There are recovery programs available in or near Vulcan which service both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, medications which are dispensed in what is called opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist the same as heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same neural receptors which make a person feel high from heroin or prescription pain killers are activated by these two drugs so that an opiate dependent client will ideally no longer engage in addict behavior and won't experience cravings and withdrawal. There are dangers with side effects, drug interactions, and even overdose with both buprenorphine and methadone, which is why they are highly regulated and can only be prescribed in a clinical setting.
Buprenorphine and methadone clients are on these medications regularly so they don't experience cravings, withdrawal, etc. but ideally at a dose which isn't at the same time making them feel euphoria. Euphoria is possible at a high dosage, more so with methadone than buprenorphine. At centers which treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, actual rehabilitation activities and therapies are generally limited beyond managing the medication and the primary treatment objective is to handle the withdrawal symptoms and put an end to the illicit drug use. Some centers do offer a small amount of counseling and therapy as secondary treatment, and this is recommended and encouraged.
