Methadone and Buprenorphine Clients Only - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Facilities - Waters, MI.

There are substance abuse programs offered in or near Waters that cater to both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, medications that are used in what is known as opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist just like heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, which means the same nerve cell receptors which cause an individual to feel high from morphine or heroin are activated by these two drugs so therefore an opioid dependent client will ideally no longer become involved in addict behavior and won't experience withdrawal symptoms. There are dangers with side effects, drug interactions, and even overdose with both methadone and buprenorphine, which is why they are highly controlled and can only be administered in a clinical setting.

Buprenorphine and methadone clients take these medications regularly so they don't experience cravings, withdrawal, etc. but ideally at a dosage which isn't also making them feel euphoria. Euphoria is possible at at higher dosages, more so with methadone than buprenorphine. At clinics which treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, actual rehabilitation activities and therapies are limited beyond managing the medication and the primary treatment goal is to address the physical symptoms of their dependence. Some programs do deliver a small amount of counseling and group therapy as auxiliary services, and it is recommended and encouraged.
