Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Centers - Watervliet, MI.

Vivitrol is a medication used to help prevent drug dependency and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the medication Naltrexone, which one can get via a monthly injection. It isn't habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they essentially cannot get drunk or high.

There are particular precautions that should be be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, someone who with the intent to begin Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for at least 7-10 days. This includes people who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given drugs such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been taking Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of 7 days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Watervliet that also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk with your therapist or Dr. in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you build and maintain the drug and alcohol free life you want.
