There are programs available in or near Whitehall that cater to both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, medications that are administered in what is called opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist the same as heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, which means the same nerve cell receptors which make a person feel high from morphine or heroin are stimulated by these two drugs so therefore an opiate addicted client will ideally no longer engage in addict behavior and won't have withdrawal symptoms. There are dangers with side effects, drug interactions, and even overdose with both buprenorphine and methadone, which is why they are highly controlled and can only be dispensed in a clinical setting.
Buprenorphine and methadone clients take these medications consistently so they don't experience withdrawal symptoms, etc. but ideally at a dose which isn't at the same time making them feel euphoria. Euphoria can be experienced at a high dosage, more significantly with methadone than buprenorphine. At clinics that treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, actual rehabilitation activities and therapies are generally limited beyond managing the medication and the primary treatment objective is to treat the withdrawal symptoms and put an end to the illicit drug use. Some programs do deliver a small amount of counseling and group therapy as supplementary services, and this is recommended and encouraged.
