Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Facilities - Wyoming, MI.

Vivitrol is a medication used to help prevent drug dependency and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the drug Naltrexone, which is available through injection once a month. It is not addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual injects Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks alcohol or takes opioids they essentially cannot get drunk or high.

There are particular precautions that need to be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, someone who with the intent to begin Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for at least seven to ten days. This includes individuals who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given drugs like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or a person who has been taking Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of a week if they want to start Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used as part of a treatment program in Wyoming which also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk to your doctor or therapist in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you build and maintain the drug and alcohol free life you want.
