Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Facilities - Angora, MN.

Vivitrol is a drug used to help prevent drug or alcohol use and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the medication Naltrexone, that one can get through a monthly injection. It is not addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual drinks or takes opioids they essentially can't get high or drunk.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, an individual who intends to start Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This is including people who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds like Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been taking Methadone for several years, quitting quickly can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of seven days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of an addiction treatment program in Angora that also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk with your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological tools can help you maintain and build the drug-free life you want.
