Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Centers - Argyle, MN.

Vivitrol is a medication used to help prevent drug dependency and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the drug Naltrexone, which is available via a monthly injection. It is not addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they basically can't get high or drunk.

There are certain precautions that should be be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, a client who with the intent to start Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for at least 7-10 days. This includes clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds like Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or a person who has been on Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least a week in order to start Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used as part of an addiction treatment program in Argyle that also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak with your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological tools can help you build and maintain the drug and alcohol free life you want.
