Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Programs - Arlington, MN.

Vivitrol is a medication used to help prevent drug abuse and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the drug Naltrexone, which is available through a monthly injection. It is not habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks or takes opioids they essentially can't get drunk or high.

There are particular precautions that need to be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. First off, a client who with the intent to begin Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for at least 7-10 days. This is including people who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or a person who has been taking Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of 7 days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in Arlington which also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak to your therapist or doctor in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you maintain and build the drug-free life you want.
