Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehab Programs - Avoca, MN.

Vivitrol is a medication used to help prevent drug abuse and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the drug Naltrexone, which is available through a monthly injection. It isn't addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone takes Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they basically can't get drunk or high.

There are certain precautions that should be be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, a client who intends to start Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This is including people who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking medications such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or someone who has been taking Methadone for several years, quitting quickly can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of 7 days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used as part of an addiction treatment program in Avoca that also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk to your therapist or Dr. in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you build the drug and alcohol free life you want.
