Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Facilities - Balaton, MN.

Vivitrol is a drug used to help prevent drug or alcohol use and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the medication Naltrexone, which is available via a monthly injection. It isn't addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual drinks or tries to get high on opioids they essentially can't get drunk or high.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, a client who plans to start Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for at least seven to ten days. This is including clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given drugs like Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or a person who has been on Methadone for several years, quitting quickly can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of seven days if they want to start Vivitrol.

These medications must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Balaton which also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak to your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological aids can help you build and maintain the sober life you want.
