Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Centers - Bingham Lake, MN.

Vivitrol is a med used to prevent drug use and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the drug Naltrexone, that one can get through a monthly injection. It isn't addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual drinks or tries to get high on opioids they essentially cannot get drunk or high.

There are certain safety measures that need to be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, an individual who plans to start Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This includes individuals who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been taking Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least a week if they want to start Vivitrol.

These medications must be used as part of a rehab program in Bingham Lake which also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk with your doctor or therapist in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you maintain the drug and alcohol free life you want.
