Methadone and Buprenorphine Clients Only - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Centers - Bloomington, MN.

There are substance abuse programs offered in or near Bloomington which service both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, medications which are administered in what is known as opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist just like heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same neural receptors that make a person feel high from morphine or heroin are stimulated by these two drugs so that an opioid addicted client will instead no longer become involved in addict behavior and won't have cravings and withdrawal. There are dangers with side effects, drug interactions, and even overdose with both buprenorphine and methadone, which is why they are heavily controlled and can only be prescribed in a clinical setting.

Methadone and buprenorphine clients are on these medications regularly so they don't experience cravings, withdrawal, etc. but ideally at a dosage which isn't also causing them to feel high. Euphoria is possible at at higher dosages, more so with methadone than buprenorphine. At centers which treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, treatment therapies are generally limited beyond this and the main treatment goal is to manage the physical symptoms of their dependence. Some programs do provide a small amount of counseling and group therapy as auxiliary treatment, and this is recommended and encouraged.
