Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Facilities - Bock, MN.

Vivitrol is a med mainly administered to prevent drug use and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the drug Naltrexone, that is available via a monthly injection. It isn't addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they basically cannot get drunk or high.

There are certain safety measures that should be be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, a client who with the intent to begin Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for at least seven to ten days. This is including clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds like Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been taking Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least a week in order to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Bock which also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak with your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological aids can help you maintain the sober life you want.
