Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Facilities - Clitherall, MN.

Vivitrol is a med mainly administered to prevent drug use and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the drug Naltrexone, that is available through injection once a month. It is not addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual injects Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they basically can't get drunk or high.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, an individual who with the intent to start Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This is including people who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given drugs like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been on Methadone for several years, quitting quickly is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of seven days if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These medications must be used as part of a rehab program in Clitherall which also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak with your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological aids can help you maintain the sober life you want.
