Vivitrol is a med mainly administered to help prevent drug abuse and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the med Naltrexone, that is available via a monthly injection. It is not addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual drinks or takes opioids they basically can't get drunk or high.
There are certain safety measures that need to be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. First off, someone who with the intent to begin Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This is including people who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or someone who has been taking Methadone for several years, quitting quickly is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of 7 days if they want to start Vivitrol.
These medications must be used as part of an addiction treatment program in Cloquet that also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy.
