Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Facilities - Coates, MN.

Vivitrol is a medication mainly administered to help prevent drug use and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the medication Naltrexone, that is available through a monthly injection. It is not addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual drinks or tries to get high on opioids they essentially cannot get drunk or high.

There are certain safety measures that need to be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, a person who intends to start Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for at least 7-10 days. This includes individuals who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking medications such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been on Methadone for several years, quitting quickly is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of seven days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These medications must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in Coates which also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk with your doctor or therapist in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you maintain and build the sober life you want.
