Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Programs - Cokato, MN.

Vivitrol is a drug mainly administered to help prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the drug Naltrexone, which is available via injection once a month. It is not habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they basically cannot get drunk or high.

There are certain safety measures that need to be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, a client who intends to begin Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This includes people who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given medications like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been taking Methadone for several years, quitting quickly is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of a week if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of a rehab program in Cokato which also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak with your therapist or doctor in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you build and maintain the sober life you want.
