There are programs available in or near Crystal Bay that cater to both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, drugs that are administered in what is called opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist the same as heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, which means the same neural receptors that cause an individual to feel high from heroin or prescription pain killers are activated by these two drugs so therefore an opiate dependent client will ideally no longer engage in drug seeking behavior and won't experience cravings and withdrawal. There are dangers with side effects, drug interactions, and even overdose with both buprenorphine and methadone, which is why they are heavily controlled and can only be dispensed in a clinical setting.
Methadone and buprenorphine clients are on these medications consistently so they don't experience withdrawal symptoms, etc. but ideally at a dosage which isn't at the same time making them feel euphoria. Euphoria is possible at at higher dosages, more so with methadone than buprenorphine. At clinics which treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, treatment therapies are generally limited beyond managing the medication and the main treatment goal is to handle the withdrawal symptoms and put an end to the illicit drug use. Some programs do provide a small amount of counseling and group therapy as secondary services, and this is recommended and encouraged.
