Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Programs - Dennison, MN.

Vivitrol is a medication used to help prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the medication Naltrexone, which is available via a monthly injection. It isn't addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks alcohol or takes opioids they basically can't get high or drunk.

There are particular precautions that need to be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. First off, someone who with the intent to start Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This includes clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given drugs like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been taking Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least 7 days if they want to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of a treatment program in Dennison that also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk to your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological tools can help you build the drug and alcohol free life you want.
