Methadone and Buprenorphine Clients Only - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Programs - Elizabeth, MN.

There are programs available in or near Elizabeth that cater to both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, drugs that are used in what is called opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist the same as heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same neural receptors that make a person feel high from heroin or prescription pain killers are activated by these two drugs so therefore an opioid dependent client will instead not become involved in drug seeking behavior and won't experience withdrawal symptoms. There are risks of drug interactions, side effects, and even overdose with both buprenorphine and methadone, which is why they are heavily controlled and can only be dispensed in a clinical setting.

Buprenorphine and methadone clients take these medications consistently so they don't experience withdrawal symptoms, etc. but hopefully at a dosage which isn't also causing them to feel euphoria. Euphoria can be experienced at at higher dosages, more so with methadone than buprenorphine. At centers that treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, actual rehabilitation activities and therapies are generally limited beyond this and the main treatment goal is to handle the withdrawal symptoms and put an end to the illicit drug use. Some clinics do deliver a limited amount of counseling and group therapy as auxiliary treatment, and it is encouraged.
