There are programs offered in or near Forest Lake which service both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, controlled medications that are administered in what is known as opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist just like heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same nerve cell receptors which make a person feel high from heroin or prescription pain killers are stimulated by these two drugs so that an opioid addicted client will instead not engage in drug seeking behavior and won't have cravings and withdrawal. There are risks of side effects, drug interactions, and even addiction and overdose with both methadone and buprenorphine, which is why they are highly regulated and can only be administered in a clinical setting.
Methadone and buprenorphine clients take these medications daily so they don't experience withdrawal symptoms, etc. but hopefully at a dose which isn't also making them feel high. Euphoria can be experienced at a high dosage, more significantly with methadone than buprenorphine. At centers that treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, treatment therapies are limited beyond managing the medication and the main treatment objective is to manage the withdrawal symptoms and put an end to the illicit drug use. Some programs do provide a limited amount of counseling and therapy as secondary services, and this is recommended and encouraged.
