Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Centers - Gary, MN.

Vivitrol is a medication mainly administered to help prevent drug use and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the drug Naltrexone, which is available via a monthly injection. It is not habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual takes Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when someone takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they basically can't get high or drunk.

There are particular precautions that need to be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. First off, a client who plans to start Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for at least 7-10 days. This is including clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given drugs such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been on Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of 7 days if they want to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in Gary which also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak with your therapist or doctor in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you build and maintain the drug and alcohol free life you want.
