Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Programs - Gem Lake, MN.

Vivitrol is a drug mainly administered to prevent drug or alcohol dependency and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the drug Naltrexone, which is available via injection once a month. It isn't addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when someone takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they basically cannot get drunk or high.

There are certain safety measures that should be be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, a client who plans to start Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for at least seven to ten days. This includes people who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been on Methadone for several years, quitting quickly can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least 7 days if they want to start Vivitrol.

These medications must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Gem Lake which also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak to your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological tools can help you build and maintain the drug-free life you want.
