Methadone and Buprenorphine Clients Only - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Facilities - Georgetown, MN.

There are substance abuse programs offered in or near Georgetown which service both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, controlled medications that are dispensed in what is known as opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist the same as heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same neural receptors that cause an individual to feel high from heroin or prescription pain killers are activated by these two drugs so therefore an opiate addicted client will instead no longer engage in addict behavior and won't have cravings and withdrawal. There are risks of side effects, drug interactions, and even overdose with both methadone and buprenorphine, which is why they are highly controlled and can only be administered in a clinical setting.

Methadone and buprenorphine clients take these medications regularly so they don't experience cravings, withdrawal, etc. but hopefully at a dose which isn't at the same time causing them to feel euphoria. Euphoria can be experienced at a high dosage, more so with methadone than buprenorphine. At programs which treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, actual rehabilitation activities and therapies are limited beyond managing the medication and the primary treatment objective is to manage the withdrawal symptoms and put an end to the illicit drug use. Some programs do provide a small amount of counseling and therapy as supplementary services, and it is recommended and encouraged.
