Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Centers - Goodhue, MN.

Vivitrol is a drug used to prevent drug or alcohol use and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the drug Naltrexone, that is available via injection once a month. It isn't addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone injects Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks or takes opioids they essentially cannot get drunk or high.

There are particular safety measures that should be be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, someone who with the intent to begin Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This is including people who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given drugs like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been on Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least seven days if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of a rehab program in Goodhue that also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak to your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological aids can help you live the sober life you want.
