There are substance abuse programs available in or near Grand Marais that cater to both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, drugs which are dispensed in what is called opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist just like heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, which means the same neural receptors which make a person feel high from morphine or heroin are activated by these two drugs so therefore an opiate addicted client will ideally not become involved in addict behavior and won't have cravings and withdrawal. There are risks of side effects, drug interactions, and even addiction and overdose with both buprenorphine and methadone, which is why they are highly controlled and can only be prescribed in a clinical setting.
Methadone and buprenorphine clients take these medications consistently so they don't experience withdrawal symptoms, etc. but hopefully at a dose which isn't also causing them to feel high. Euphoria can be experienced at a high dosage, more so with methadone than buprenorphine. At centers which treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, actual rehabilitation activities and therapies are generally limited beyond this and the primary treatment objective is to address the withdrawal symptoms and put an end to the illicit drug use. Some clinics do offer a small amount of counseling and group therapy as secondary services, and it is encouraged.
