American Indians and Alaska Natives are historically more likely than individuals of other racial and ethnic groups to require recovery services for substance abuse and addiction. Reversely, American Indians and Alaska Natives are also more prone to feel the need to seek treatment than other racial/ethnic groups. Almost 50% of American Indian and Alaska Native drug and alcohol treatment admissions arrive to treatment as criminal justice clients, meaning they have very likely agreed to a court ordered diversion program to receive rehab in lieu of jail times for their charges. So as one can see, there is a definite need for different types of treatment programs to cover all of the very unique needs of this client demographic, including addiction treatment programs in native languages.
