There are recovery programs offered in or near Hazel Run that cater to both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, controlled medications which are used in what is called opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist the same as heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, which means the same neural receptors which cause an individual to feel high from heroin or prescription pain killers are activated by these two drugs so that an opioid addicted client will ideally no longer engage in drug seeking behavior and won't experience cravings and withdrawal. There are dangers with side effects, drug interactions, and even addiction and overdose with both methadone and buprenorphine, which is why they are highly controlled and can only be prescribed in a clinical setting.
Methadone and buprenorphine clients take these medications regularly so they don't experience cravings, withdrawal, etc. but hopefully at a dosage which isn't also causing them to feel euphoria. Euphoria is possible at at higher dosages, more so with methadone than buprenorphine. At centers which treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, treatment therapies are generally limited beyond this and the primary treatment goal is to treat the physical symptoms of their dependence. Some clinics do offer a limited amount of counseling and group therapy as auxiliary treatment, and it is recommended and encouraged.
