Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Programs - Houston, MN.

Vivitrol is a med used to prevent drug dependency and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the drug Naltrexone, which is available through injection once a month. It isn't habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual takes Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks or tries to get high on opioids they basically cannot get drunk or high.

There are particular safety measures that need to be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, a client who intends to begin Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This includes individuals who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking medications such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been taking Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of seven days if they want to start Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in Houston which also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk with your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological tools can help you maintain the drug-free life you want.
