Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Programs - Iron Junction, MN.

Vivitrol is a med mainly administered to prevent drug use and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the med Naltrexone, that one can get through injection once a month. It is not addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone takes Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they essentially can't get high or drunk.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, a person who plans to start Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for at least 7-10 days. This includes individuals who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or a person who has been on Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least 7 days if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in Iron Junction which also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak to your therapist or doctor in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you maintain the drug-free life you want.
