Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Programs - Lake Wilson, MN.

Vivitrol is a drug mainly administered to help prevent drug use and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the drug Naltrexone, which one can get through a monthly injection. It is not addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual takes Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual takes a drink of alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they essentially cannot get drunk or high.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. First off, a person who intends to begin Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This is including individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking drugs such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been taking Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of a week in order to start Vivitrol.

These medications must be used as part of a rehab program in Lake Wilson that also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk with your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological aids can help you build the drug-free life you want.
