Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Centers - Lismore, MN.

Vivitrol is a medication mainly administered to prevent drug or alcohol use and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the medication Naltrexone, that one can get via a monthly injection. It isn't addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual drinks or takes opioids they essentially cannot get high or drunk.

There are certain safety measures that should be be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, a client who plans to start Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for at least seven to ten days. This includes people who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given medications such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or a person who has been on Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of a week in order to start Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used as part of a rehab program in Lismore which also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk with your therapist or Dr. in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you maintain the drug-free life you want.
