Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Centers - Loman, MN.

Vivitrol is a med used to help prevent drug abuse and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the drug Naltrexone, which is available via a monthly injection. It isn't addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they basically can't get drunk or high.

There are particular precautions that need to be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, someone who intends to begin Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This is including people who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or a person who has been on Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least a week in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of a rehab program in Loman that also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk with your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological tools can help you build the drug-free life you want.
