The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, "SAMHSA" for short, is the government agency responsible for health efforts to promote the behavioral health of the United States. One of its responsibilities is the administering of opioid rehabilitation facilities, which are programs which provide medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to clients who are experiencing opioid dependency and addiction. Medications given are drugs such as buprenorphine, methadone, and other drugs that help withdrawal and curb cravings for opioid dependent people. SAMSHA certified opioid rehab facilities in Madison are programs which are legally allowed to distribute the medications used in MAT as long as they maintain their certification and continue to meet certain requirements. A requirement that MAT clients must also receive auxiliary benefits aside from medicine such as counseling or behavioral therapy.

An opioid rehab program can receive initial certification while working towards becoming fully accredited, however, are required to get their full accreditation in a year. Opioid rehab programs accredited by SAMSHA need to get licensed also by their own state. In addition, they must register with the Drug Enforcement Administration via a local DEA office. Once an opioid rehabilitation facility is certified, it must be re-certified each year or every three years contingent upon the kind of certification that was given.
