Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehab Centers - Mantorville, MN.

Vivitrol is a medication used to help prevent drug or alcohol use and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the drug Naltrexone, which is available via a monthly injection. It is not habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they essentially cannot get high or drunk.

There are certain precautions that should be be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, a client who plans to begin Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This includes individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking drugs such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been on Methadone for several years, quitting quickly is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of seven days if they want to start Vivitrol.

These medications must be used as part of a treatment program in Mantorville that also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk with your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological aids can help you maintain the drug and alcohol free life you want.
