Methadone and Buprenorphine Clients Only - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Centers - Mcintosh, MN.

There are substance abuse programs available in or near Mcintosh that cater to both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, controlled medications which are dispensed in what is called opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist the same as heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, which means the same nerve cell receptors that cause an individual to feel high from morphine or heroin are stimulated by these two drugs so that an opioid dependent client will instead no longer become involved in drug seeking behavior and won't have withdrawal symptoms. There are risks of side effects, drug interactions, and even addiction and overdose with both buprenorphine and methadone, which is why they are highly regulated and can only be administered in a clinical setting.

Buprenorphine and methadone clients are on these medications consistently so they don't experience cravings, withdrawal, etc. but ideally at a dosage which isn't also making them feel euphoria. Euphoria can be experienced at at higher dosages, more significantly with methadone than buprenorphine. At programs that treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, actual rehabilitation activities and therapies are generally limited beyond managing the medication and the main treatment goal is to manage the withdrawal symptoms and put an end to the illicit drug use. Some programs do offer a limited amount of counseling and therapy as secondary treatment, and this is recommended and encouraged.
