Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehab Facilities - Milan, MN.

Vivitrol is a medication mainly administered to prevent drug use and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the medication Naltrexone, which is available through injection once a month. It isn't addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when someone takes a drink of alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they basically cannot get high or drunk.

There are particular precautions that need to be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, a person who intends to begin Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for at least 7-10 days. This includes individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or someone who has been on Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least a week if they want to start Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Milan which also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk with your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological tools can help you live the sober life you want.
