The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, "SAMHSA" for short, is the government agency responsible for health efforts to advance the mental health of the U.S.. One of its duties is the administering of opioid treatment programs, which are programs which offer medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to clients who are in the midst of opioid dependency and addiction. Medications given are drugs such as methadone, buprenorphine and other drugs which help withdrawal and curb cravings for opioid dependent individuals. SAMSHA certified opioid treatment facilities in Mound are programs who are legally allowed to distribute the medications used in MAT being they maintain their certification and always maintain the necessary requirements. A requirement that MAT clients must also receive ancillary services in addition to medication like psychotherapy, behavioral therapy or counseling.

An opioid treatment center can receive initial approval documentation while working towards becoming fully accredited, but must become fully accredited within a year. In addition, they must register with the Drug Enforcement Administration via a local DEA office.
