Methadone and Buprenorphine Clients Only - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Centers - Oak Park, MN.

There are addiction programs offered in or near Oak Park that cater to both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, drugs that are administered in what is called opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist just like heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same nerve cell receptors that make a person feel high from morphine or heroin are activated by these two drugs so that an opiate dependent client will instead no longer engage in addict behavior and won't have cravings and withdrawal. There are risks of drug interactions, side effects, and even overdose with both buprenorphine and methadone, which is why they are highly controlled and can only be administered in a clinical setting.

Buprenorphine and methadone clients are on these medications daily so they don't experience cravings, withdrawal, etc. but hopefully at a dose which isn't also causing them to feel high. Euphoria is possible at at higher dosages, more so with methadone than buprenorphine. At clinics that treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, treatment therapies are generally limited beyond this and the main treatment objective is to manage the withdrawal symptoms and put an end to the illicit drug use. Some programs do provide a small amount of counseling and group therapy as secondary treatment, and it is recommended and encouraged.
