Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Facilities - Onamia, MN.

Vivitrol is a drug mainly administered to help prevent drug use and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the medication Naltrexone, which is available through a monthly injection. It is not habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they basically cannot get drunk or high.

There are certain safety measures that should be be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, a person who with the intent to start Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for at least 7-10 days. This includes clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking drugs like Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or someone who has been on Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least 7 days if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These medications must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in Onamia which also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk to your doctor or therapist in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you build and maintain the sober life you want.
