Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Centers - Plato, MN.

Vivitrol is a medication used to help prevent drug abuse and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the med Naltrexone, that is available through a monthly injection. It is not addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone injects Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual drinks or takes opioids they essentially can't get drunk or high.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, a client who with the intent to begin Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This is including clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking drugs like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been taking Methadone for several years, quitting quickly can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least seven days if they want to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in Plato which also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk with your therapist or Dr. in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you maintain and build the drug and alcohol free life you want.
