There are recovery programs offered in or near Ponemah which service both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, drugs which are administered in what is known as opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist the same as heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same neural receptors which cause an individual to feel high from morphine or heroin are stimulated by these two drugs so that an opioid addicted client will ideally no longer become involved in drug seeking behavior and won't have cravings and withdrawal. There are risks of side effects, drug interactions, and even addiction and overdose with both buprenorphine and methadone, which is why they are heavily regulated and can only be administered in a clinical setting.
Buprenorphine and methadone clients are on these medications daily so they don't experience withdrawal symptoms, etc. but hopefully at a dose which isn't also causing them to feel euphoria. Euphoria occurs at at higher dosages, more significantly with methadone than buprenorphine. At clinics which treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, actual rehabilitation activities and therapies are limited beyond this and the main treatment goal is to manage the physical symptoms of their dependence. Some clinics do deliver a limited amount of counseling and group therapy as auxiliary treatment, and it is recommended and encouraged.
