Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Facilities - Randolph, MN.

Vivitrol is a medication mainly administered to help prevent drug or alcohol use and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the drug Naltrexone, which is available through a monthly injection. It isn't addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual drinks or takes opioids they basically can't get drunk or high.

There are particular precautions that need to be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, a person who with the intent to begin Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This includes people who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given medications like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been taking Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least seven days if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These medications must be used as part of a treatment program in Randolph which also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk with your therapist or Dr. in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you build the drug and alcohol free life you want.
